INTRODUCTION

Chimeric Antigen Receptors (CARs) are recombinant receptors that are composed of four regions: an antigen recognition domain (ectodomain), a hinge region, a transmembrane region, and an intracellular T cell signaling domain (endodomain). CAR-T cell therapy uses T cells engineered with CARs to target specific antigen(s) for cancer immunotherapy.

Melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM), also known as CD146 (cluster of differentiation 146) or cell surface glycoprotein MUC18, is a cell adhesion molecule currently used as a marker for endothelial cell lineage. Expression of MCAM is found in vascular endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and pericytes. MCAM is involved in glomerular filtration and vascular wound healing. It is a biomarker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and uveal melanoma. MCAM protein is a target of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells used in the treatment of cancers.
