Cytokine Expression Plasmid Vectors

Cytokines are a broad type of small proteins produced by various cell populations including immune cells such as T lymphocytes, macrophages, B lymphocytes, mast cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and many stromal cells. According to their presumed function, production cell, or target of action, cytokines are further divided into different subgroups including lymphokine (produced by lymphocytes), monokine (produced by monocytes), chemokine (cytokines with chemotactic activities), interleukin (produced by one leukocyte and acting on other leukocytes), interferons (involved in antiviral responses), and proinflammatory cytokines (produced mainly by activated macrophages and are involved in the up-regulation of inflammatory reactions). Cytokines play key roles in health and disease, specifically in host immune responses. Some cytokines and anticytokines have become an increasingly important class of drugs in the treatment and management of cancer, metabolic disorders, autoimmune disorders and inflammatory diseases. For example, interferons are being used to treat viral diseases and cancers. Erythropoietin (EPO) is used to treat anemia. Anti-tissue necrosis factor therapies, such as Enbrel (etanercept; Immunex Corp) and Remicade (infliximab; Centocor) have demonstrated clinical efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.
