Aptamers are single-stranded DNA oligos or RNA oligos or peptides that can bind to a target with high affinity and specificity.
The aptamer-target binding is determined by their tertiary structures. Aptamers are developed in vitro through a process called the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment (SELEX).
Compared with antibodies, aptamers own multiple advantages: 1) faster development time, 2) smaller size, 3) lower working concentration, 4) in vitro chemical synthesis with higher batch-to-batch consistency, 5) more stable and easier transfer etc.
