Virus Platform

In molecular biology, recombinant viruses are produced in cells through co-transfection of the transfer plasmid containing target DNA sequence and the packaging plasmids. Unlike wild type viruses, partial genome of recombinant viruses, which is critical for viral replication, is replaced with sequence of interest. When recombinant viruses infect into cells, they can not replicate or further produce more viruses due to the deficient viral genome.

Recomninant viruses are powerful tools for dilivery of genetic material into host cells and animals. Compared to non-viral plasmid transfection, recombinant viruses can infect broad host cell types with higher efficiency.

There are four types of recombinant viruses that are commonly used for research: adenovirus, adeno-associated virus (AAV), lentivirus and retrovirus, each of which exhibit different properties.
